Porsche 917K 24 hours of Le Mans
The Porsche 917K, one of the most iconic race cars in motorsport history, clinched a historic victory at the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans. This success marked Porsche’s first overall win at the prestigious endurance race and solidified the 917K’s legendary status. Powered by a 4.5-liter flat-12 engine capable of delivering around 600 horsepower, the 917K (“K” for “Kurzheck,” meaning “short tail” in German) was designed for top speed and stability on the long straights of Le Mans.
The car’s victory came in challenging weather conditions, with heavy rain throughout the race. The 917K driven by Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood, for the Porsche Salzburg team, managed to outlast the field, showcasing Porsche’s engineering prowess and resilience. The triumph at Le Mans in 1970 not only brought Porsche its first overall victory in the endurance classic but also set the stage for the brand’s dominance in sports car racing for years to come. The 917K’s blend of power, speed, and innovative design has since made it a motorsport legend.
