Ford GT40 Le Mans 1966 N5 3rd Place
The Ford GT40 Mk II that secured 3rd place at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans was a key part of Ford’s historic 1-2-3 sweep, an achievement that ended Ferrari’s dominance and marked a turning point in endurance racing history. Driven by Ronnie Bucknum and Dick Hutcherson, the car was powered by a robust 7.0L V8 engine, delivering immense speed and reliability over the grueling 24-hour race.
The 1966 Le Mans was marked by torrential rain, making it one of the most challenging in the event’s history. Despite these conditions, Bucknum and Hutcherson maintained a steady pace, showcasing the GT40's engineering excellence and ability to handle both wet and dry surfaces. Their performance played a crucial role in Ford’s strategic dominance, as all three factory cars worked cohesively to secure victory.
Crossing the line just behind the 1st and 2nd place GT40s, the 3rd place car reinforced Ford’s message of superiority and cemented the GT40 as a motorsport legend. The result not only demonstrated the car’s capability but also Ford’s determination and innovation, which would lead to four consecutive Le Mans wins from 1966 to 1969.
